Art for KS1 and KS2

Over the last few years, I have been the art lead across the two schools in our federation.

I've never considered myself an artist as I distinctly recall being told during my GCSE's that I couldn't draw and therefore that was that. I've always been crafty though and ended up with the role as, being the EYFS teacher, I was the only person in the school brave enough to get out the powder paint and the clay.

I've now created three different art curriculums in the last few years and become someone who goes to a fortnightly art class!

My curriculums always include more than the National Curriculum requires (let's be honest that's not difficult) and aim to work with a wide range of art styles to give ALL children the opportunity to find an art style that they enjoy and can feel successful in. There are also a wide range of artists and craftspeople studied with the units helping the children to learn about and learn from their work.

Over in my Teachers Pay Teachers store, I've started to upload some of my teaching units. Overall, I have planned enough units for a whole school curriculum with a new aspect every half term- 6 per school year. Once I have all of the units uploaded, I will create some bundles and show how they can work for a wide range of class organisations.

For now, I'm going to show you a couple of my units in detail- one for KS1 and the other for KS2.

KS1 first...

This unit is called 'Fantastic Feasts' and works on collage, drawing and clay skills with a focus on the aritist Giuseppe Arcimboldo.

Each of my units starts with an overview that sets out the knowledge and skills that will be covered in each unit.

There is then a full six week plan with links to relevant online resources and the items you will need to teach the unit.

The final part is a simple assessment sheet that allows you to record children who are not meeting the main objectives of the unit.

The KS2 unit is called 'Exploring Identity'. It works on drawing, collage, printing and photography and looks at the work of David Hockney, Peter Blake and EMELBI.

The unit follows the same layout as the KS1 unit.

Art, and trying to help all children to find an aspect of it that they can grow to love, has become a real passion and I hope that by sharing some of my ideas, others will grow to love it too.
